Who we are

Sarah Munn started Barefoot in 2012 when she faced challenges with finding suitable services for her young children while living in Rye. As a mother of 2 children who have additional needs, Sarah understands the challenges and celebrations many of our families face, from the frustrations of navigating services to the joy of achieving important life goals. Today the practice has grown, but the foundations remain strong in empowering families and giving children a say in their own progress.

Sarah has walked barefoot in many of her families footsteps which makes Barefoot Therapists a unique service to partner with if you are a parent, carer or educational setting. Sarah’s vision was to provide services which placed valueing her clients at the centre of decision making, from a positive environment, to empathetic and skillful therapists. Sarah qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1996 focusing her professional career on working with children both in the UK and Australia and has enjoyed a senior clinical role in neurology and neurosurgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and both paediatric clinical and management roles locally on the Peninsula.

our philosophy

Our Philosophy is to provide responsive therapy programs which address local families goals. We always try and listen to your point of view and develop the services you need. At Barefoot Therapists we know clinical services are often too clinical, so we aim to deliver community programs which address daily living challenges and consider the child’s intrinsic motivation. We know when kids are actively engaged in activities, they learn best.

Our therapists can visit you and your child in your own home, or in your child’s usual environments. We offer a friendly service working on real daily activities. We can come to your school, kindergarten, family home and community environments so that your child can grow and learn while feeling relaxed and having fun. Alternatively, you are welcome to see us at our beautiful rooms in Main Ridge or Frankston where we have a quiet, friendly spaces for children to be assessed and practice new skills with both indoor and outdoor areas.

The original ‘Barefoot Doctors’ wandered the rural regions of China to make sure everyone had access to basic medical care. Many were farmers, but here at Barefoot Therapists we actually all have University degrees and national registration. Still, we like to go wandering barefoot when we can.

Nelipot (n.) – One who walks barefoot.
